VITAMINS & FLUORIDE

If you breastfeed or partially breastfeed your baby, there are two ways to supplement her with vitamin D:
  • Give your baby 400 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) by mouth daily
  • You (mother) should consume approximately 6400 IU of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) by mouth daily
Note: All formula-fed infants consuming less than 32 ounces of formula in 24 hours should also be supplemented with 400IU of vitamin D3 daily.

Fluoride supplementation is no longer recommended for breastfed babies. However, it is recommended that all infants have their teeth brushed twice daily with fluoride-containing toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice until age 2) as soon as the first tooth erupts.
